NZSAR Secretariat
The New Zealand Search and Rescue Secretariat is modelled on the Canadian National SAR Secretariat and is comprised of a Secretariat manager and a Senior Advisor.
What does the NZSAR Secretariat do?
The Secretariat provides the NZSAR Council with support services and policy advice and assists in the coordination of Council strategy.

What are the objectives of the Secretariat?
The Secretariat helps the Council to:
- maintain NZSAR’s key documentation
- sustain strong domestic and international SAR linkages
- monitor New Zealand’s domestic and international SAR obligations
- respond to SAR issues as they arise
- provide relevant advice
What is the Secretariat's scope and operation?
The Secretariat does not have an operational SAR role, nor does it oversee individual SAR delivery agencies.
The Secretariat supports the NZSAR Council and provides leadership to the Consultative Committee which is a forum for all New Zealand based SAR stakeholders. The Council, Secretariat and Consultative Committee work closely as a team.
Who is the Secretariat accountable to?
The Secretariat is accountable to the NZSAR Council.
For day-to-day matters and administrative convenience, the Secretariat uses the Ministry of Transport financial, human resource and administrative resources.
External Communication and Media
The Secretariat provides advice and support for the Council's external communications and media activity.
Processes
The Secretariat supports the processes of the Council and the Consultative Committee. Internal processes are arranged by the Secretariat Manager.
Who administers the Secretariat?
While the Secretariat provides administrative support to the Council and the Consultative Committee as required, it is in turn administered and accommodated by the Ministry of Transport. Costs for the Secretariat are met directly from government.
